Dredging Liaison Report
October 19, 2007 by John Kramer · Leave a Comment

Southold Town’s Dredge committee met at Town Hall on Tues Oct 16. It was run by Chairman Eugene Burger, attending were Chris Showalter, Rob Lehnert, Pete McGreevy, and Town Trustee Dave Bergen.
They have begun an inventory of all the town creeks with pictures, littoral drift info, and summary reports as to navigation impediments, etc. This committee will also gather information for ….the town on small dredge equipment that could be appropriate for the Town to buy or lease if the Town Board should consider that option. (It was noted that Suff Co. Dept of Public Works is requesting $ for a second dredge in next year’s budget.) They intend, as we do, to form a liaison contact within each agency that has anything to do with the dredge permit process.
Discrepancies involving the completion of fish habitat and endangered species reports necessary for the permits for Deep Hole and School House Creeks were also discussed. They plan to “flow chart’ each creek as regards it’s physical status and it’s permit process status. This will show them which creeks will need dredging and when; and what the application status is for each agency for each creek.
It was mentioned that SoutholdVOICE members may be available to volunteer to help in their efforts, and the idea was well received. If any SoutholdVOICE member would like to join this liaison committee, please email John Kramer at SoutholdVOICE – AT – gmail.com, (replacing the -AT- with @) and putting Dredge Comm in the subject line. We could use the help!
John Kramer, Chairman SoutholdVOICE

The dredge finished up at Cedar Beach last weekend. I was told by Southold VOICE member Chris Showalter that they did a good job. The dredge then went to Riverhead and has been working on a project there. I was told today that they will be moving to Deep Hole Creek inlet by this weekend. This will be Southold’s third creek to be done this season. That is great but I am determined that we are not done yet. I am sure that Little Creek will be done this season, and IF the Army Corp releases permits as promised, that possibly a couple of additional Southold locations will be done. We need to remember that SCDPW needs to address the needs of the other east end towns and that all work must be done by January 15.
I will keep Southold VOICE informed as we progress through this dredging season.

The dredging of Brushes Creek has been successfully completed this week, thanks to the efforts of a number of concerned citizens, especially Dave Bergen. As a side benefit, we have retrieved a significant portion of our beach area to the west of the creek. Thanks to all from South Oakwood Homeowners Association.

As an update, the crew completed Little Creek on Friday. They have moved on to Sebonic, which will be followed by Noyac, both located in Southampton. My understanding is that when they complete those two locations, they will retun to Southold to do a couple of additional creeks. I will keep everyone posted as information becomes available.

I am pleased to report that the Army Corp released permits for Jockey Creek Spur, Corey, Goose and James this week. This leaves us only School House Creek which is lacking a permit. Once the rig gets done in Southampton, SCDPW and I will confer with regards to which Southold creek they go to next. Corey Creek has a window limit of December 15 while the others have a limit of January 15. I passed this information onto both Senator Clinton and Congressman Bishops’s office, thanking them once again for their assistance.
I will keep you posted.
Hello Dave Bergen:
I live on Richmond Creek and would happily report that I saw the dredge start operations today at the entrance to Richmond creek.
Thanks,

Yes Paul, they did head over to Richmond Creek. And I am happy to report that from there they will be heading over to Corey Creek. That will bring us to six Southold creeks done this season. I received a communication that a few more could be done in Southold, depending on weather and equipment not breaking down. Remember that the window closes down by the middle of January. Keep warm weather thoughts everyone!
