SoutholdVOICE Inc., is a not-for-profit organization of waterfront property owners and others interested in the use, enjoyment and preservation of Southold Township's extensive waterfront from Laurel to Orient Point. The organization promotes awareness of issues affecting shoreline and marine resources to further cooperation between responsible use, regulatory protection, and the rights of riparian owners for the ultimate benefit of our community.
We asked Dave Bergen to tell us more about what is happening at Goose Creek, and he has sent us this reply:
“The County only gets permits to do the interface. So they
only went up to the bridge. I doubt that they could get under the bridge anyway. Dredging inside of creeks is very complicated and expensive.
In most cases, the dredge material needs to be trucked away to a DEC approved upland source. I was told that this triples the price. Plus many feel that the dredging inside creeks causes so much damage to indigenous species and habitats that it is too costly from an environmental perspective. As such, the Trustees have not supported these projects. I believe that this could be open to discussion.
They did finish yesterday with Goose Creek and were going to leave this morning. They are heading over to New Suffolk today.”
A dredging update…..I visited the dredging crews down at Goldsmith’s yesterday and can tell you that good progress is being made however, a little slower than anticipated since one of the dump trucks broke down. They are using a large backhoe right now and have opened up the mouth of the inlet so there is finally some water flushing into the inlet/pond. The spoils I saw were very clean and sandy. They are depositing the spoils onto the beach. Work is continuing and is being overseen by Southold Town.
