Boating season is just around the corner

It won’t be long before we get the boats ready for launching. A sure sign of spring is when we see the navigation bouys reappear in the creeks. Perhaps this is a good time to think about the condition and placement location of the nav aids in your creek. Are any missing? Is there a location that needs a mark to prevent groundings? Your suggestions will be compiled and shared with the Town. Please email your thoughts to Barbara Christianson, our committee chair: barbarac@southoldvoice.com

A Dredging Update: the Trustees are working with SCDPW in an attempt to have both James Creek and Wickham Creek dredged during a brief two week window later this Spring. We had also requested the consideration for the dredge to return to Little Creek as the mouth has been reduced in width by about one third since it was dredged in December. A meeting hosted by SCDPW was held last week with the Army Corp, DOS and the DEC. It appears that there is strong consideration to have James Creek done. Wickham Creek also might be done depending on an evaluation being done by the DEC for the presence or potential presence of Piping Plovers during the proposed dredging window. As for Little Creek, SCDPW has informed us that they can not consider this request without the Town first amending the dredge windows stated in the LWRP to allow for this activity, followed by concurrence by the DOS. It should be noted that I brought this challenge to the LWRP Council in April 2007, but it has yet to be rectified. Supervisor Russell was made aware of this most recent SCDPW decision at a meeting of the Town Board Dredging Advisory Committee meeting held on 3/26.
Hi. We notified the state DOS in May of last year that we would like to amend the dredge windows. We were notified by DOS, in writing, that we have NO authority to set or change dredge windows. As explained to Dave several times, the LWRP does not set windows, state law (DOS)does. On the issue of the LWRP itself, we are organizing a meeting with state reps to discuss the towns participation in LWRP. We had a delay because of change in governor. However, you will all be notified shortly as soon as we can set a firm date. This will be the community discussion the previous board should have had prior to deciding to adopt a LWRP. Regards, Scott
