Southold Recreation Center, Peconic Lane, Peconic, NY

Saturday July 18th from 8.30am to 11.30am

The first half hour or so is tentatively planned for a “meet and greet”, to give everyone an opportunity to chat with other SoutholdVOICE members and the Board.

Please make a point of attending to make YOUR voice heard on matters affecting YOUR use of Southold’s waterfront. There will be speakers addressing such issues as the permitting process and why, alone among all building permits, permits for waterfront structures are NOT conveyed to the buyer when you sell your property!

We anticipate other keynote speakers on such important issues as insurance and landscaping with native plantings. With the upcoming elections for Town Board and Trustees, SoutholdVOICE plans to become proactive in airing the views of the candidates on issues important to waterfront owners and recreational users of our waters.

Please attend!

I thought that I would take the opportunity to update everyone on the 2009 dredging season. Several important steps have taken place over the last six months or so to keep dredging on the minds of the County, the DEC and the Army Corp. First the good news. Permits have been obtained for Gull Pond. The permit applications are well into the process for Budds Pond and Halls Creek. We hope to have those permits in hand for this Fall’s season. I put together a meeting with Senator Gillibrand’s office with regards to Sterling Harbor. Present at this meeting were representatives from Congressman Bishop’s office, Mayor Nyce, the Army Corp and SCDPW. It was agreed that this project would become an Army Corp project rather then a SCDPW project. The Army Corp has agreed to perform a survey of the entrance this summer. Once complete, they will then determine if the entrance requires dredging and if so, where to place it in their budget cycle. Early discussions indicated that it could be placed in their 2011 budget but this all depends on several factors. I submitted to the Trustees a proposed dredging priority list for this season. Included on the list, which they supported, were Budd Pond, James Creek, Halls Creek, Little Creek, Brushes Creek, Richmond Creek, Corey Creek, West Creek and Cedar Creek. Please remember that this is only a recommended list as SCDPW has to integrate our list with those of Southampton, East Hampton, Shelter Island and Riverhead.

While dredging only occurs in the Fall, the process calls for work throughout the year. I have establsihed a very good working relationship with SCDPW, plus various elected officials including Legislature Romaine, Senator Gillibrand and Congressman Bishop to make sure that Southold’s creeks remain on everyone’s radar screen. Feel free to contact me should you have any questions at 548-3707.
