Southold Town Trustee Dredging Priority List 2010

July 27, 2010 by · 2 Comments

At the July 21 Town Trustees meeting, Dave Bergen reported the following wish list for Suffolk County dredging. Note that neither Wickham or West Creek has permits in place so it is doubtful that they will have permits in time for the dredging window. Also remember that Southold is only one of 5 towns submitting wish lists to the County so in all likelihood only a few of the 10 will get dredged this year.

  1. James Creek

  2. Wickham Creek

  3. Halls Creek

  4. West Creek

  5. Budds Pond

  6. Little Creek

  7. Schoolhouse Creek

  8. Jockey Creek Spur (ramp)

  9. Gull Pond

  10. Goose Creek

I wanted to provide everyone with a dredging update as the season is rapidly coming to a close for the creeks with a December 15 window. The crew got to Budds pond a couple of weeks ago, then went over to North Sea before returning to Southold. They are currently at James Creek. I am in touch with SCDPW weekly. The plan for now is to go to Little, Mud and Wickham, permit pending. The Wickham Creek permit has become critical. With the assistance of Ken LaValle, Ed Romaine, Senator Gillibrand and Representative Bishop, the Army Corp draft permit was released on 10/29. But the final permit has yet to arrive. This location will have a deadline of December 15. Given the fact that the DEC closed it down to shellfishing and the large commercial marina located within, it is critical that this creek be dredged prior to December 15.

I have lobbied very hard for the crew to then move over to Halls Creek. They also hope to get to Schoolhouse Creek and possibly Town Creek prior to the close of the season, January 15. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions.

Here is a new update on dredging. The season came to a close for various creeks on December 15. I am pleased to report that with the assistance of several elected officials on the State and National levels, the permits for Wickham Creek came in and the creek got dredged. I am also happy to report that SCDPW met my request to have the material put on the public beach at the Cutchogue Park at the end of Pequash Ave. Also dredged prior to December 15 were Mudd and Little Creeks.
The closing date for other creeks is January 15. The crew is presently at East Creek in Riverhead. They hope to be finished tomorrow. I am thrilled to share with you that they will then be going to Halls Creek. I presented Halls Creek to the dredge screening committee in 2007. It should give all of us great satisfaction to see the crew at Halls over the next week cleaning out this closed entrance. After Halls, I have been told that they plan on going to Schoolhouse and time permitting, Goose Creek and Town Creek.
I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. Here is to a very healthy and happy Holiday Season.
    Dave Bergen
