Thirteen months ago, April 2009, we first reported on the Peconic Estuary Program initiative for Hashamomuck Pond. A Fall update followed, and now PEP has awarded the Gardiners Bay Estates Homeowners Association a $10,000 grant to restore Spring Pond. The objective is to stop the first 45 minutes of storm runoff, which contains most of the bacteria we need to keep out of the water. At a recent Trustee work session, Southold Town Trustees agreed that in the event that permitted stairs to the beach are destroyed in a storm, that no permit will be required to rebuild and/or reinstall new stairs to the beach. The same would go for repairs to bulkheads resulting from storm damage. This is good news for everyone who has been adversely impacted by the recent Nor’easter, but Southold VOICE members have questions, which we posed to Trustee Dave Bergen. Here’s his response.

USFWS (United States Fish and Wildlife Service) is accepting public comments through November 23, 2009, on its proposed Strategic Plan for Climate Change and accompanying 5-Year Action Plan. Goals include building strategic partnerships in public and private sector, and include engaging private citizens to monitor and seek solutions for the impact of climate change impacting fish and wildlife.
