RENTAL PERMITS
Southold Town passed a law in December 2018 making it illegal for residents to rent their homes without a rental permit (14 day minimum rental).
Acquiring a rental permit is a straight forward process. Please find the items below that you will need to get started:
- Start by completing the rental permit application from the Building Department
- You will need to include a copy of the certificates of occupancy for your home
- A floor plan showing the rooms and most importantly the location of smoke and monoxide detectors
- Inspection of you home. You have choice of either supplying an architect or engineer’s certification or to have the building department perform the required inspection.
- Finally this application is filed with the building department with a fee
The only pitfall is that you find out, when the building department reviews your paperwork, whether the house you own matches the house in the Town Building Department records. If there were any modifications made to the house in the last 64 years (since 1957), the building department will require you to apply for a building permit for that modification.
There is a positive light to this process, when you go to sell your house, or leave the house to your children, you will have all the permits in place.
