Dredging is not looking good next year either

At a recent breakfast meeting, when questioned about the snafu in getting the creeks dredged this year, Southold Supervisor Scott Russell said, “Things are not looking good for the next window of opportunity (September–February) for dredging either. The county is having a difficult time getting the necessary federal permits (DEC and the Army Corps of Engineers). In his words, ” The county, state and federal [agencies] don’t play well together.” The town has offered to co-apply with the county and has biologists on staff to fill out the necessary impact statements, but the county wants to hire an outside consultant to do the work and the problem is the consultant will not have time to do even a significant fraction of the pending permit applications.
