What do you see as the main issues facing the Town of Southold as it relates to waterfront?
[divider_1]DOMINO: Southold Town Trustees work diligently to balance an owners right to quiet enjoyment of his/her property, with the need to protect, preserve, and regulate use of Town waters and wetlands; to equitably enforce the code as it applies to public and private properties, erosion control, storm water runoff, shellfish and wildlife habitat, aquaculture and public and private recreational activities.

GHOSIO: Protection from natural disasters and degrading water quality. Our waterfront is a main reason people come here to visit and live. It is crucial to our economy. We need to protect this resource for both our well-being and the well-being of the creatures that live in and around the waters.

SANDERS: The main issues facing the Town of Southold as it relates to waterfront is the balance between property rights and environmental conservation. The need to focus on erosion control, storm water runoff, shellfish and wildlife habitat protection is at the forefront of Trustee issues.

BREDEMEYER: Maintain the current level of protection of natural resources. Assist the Town Board in codifying post emergency storm procedures for the coast. Support changes to NYS coastal policy to reduce the need for costly shore hardening by recapturing sand lost to the littoral zone as is becoming commonplace in other states. We need more flexible dredge windows based on hard science to reduce dredging costs and keep our creeks healthy.

WELLS: The main issues relating to the waterfront are nitrogen in our wetlands, creeks and bays, diminishing intertidal zones and pollutants in the water runoff into the bay and Sound.

DINIZIO: The proposed, “ Natural Hazards Chapter” of the Comprehensive Plan, is loaded with potential new legislation concerning waterfront property owners, such as the effects of “Sea Level Rise” which has not been thoroughly presented in the chapter. I’m not denying the existence of sea level rise nor do I claim to know the cause but this chapter is relying on a vague measurement of the amount of sea level rise without revealing what properties in the town will actually be affected.

EISENSTEIN: The main issues confronting the waterfront , including the creeks, streams and bays, has to do with the increasing levels of nitrates in the water from runoff.

ROTHMAN: Some of the main issues that should be dealt with center around the protection of the quality of life and preserving the estuaries’, creeks, and bays that makes up the waterfront. It is a fragile ecosystem that must be preserved for future generations. It is the basis of our tourism, aquaculture and is our most important resource. In maintaining our waterfronts we must keep a balance between property owners and public rights in a responsible fashion.

FINORA: The main “big picture” issue facing Southold Town re: its waterfront is balancing human growth/desire vs. the natural balance. Our waterfront is a dynamic, regularly changing entity and we must incorporate this into our approach towards better waterfront management. Most scientific bodies expect the sea level worldwide to rise in the future. We must prepare to address this.
