Candidate Question 5

We’re constantly making things better, faster, smarter or less expensive by
leveraging technology or improving processes – striving to do more with less. Tell me about a recent project or process that you made better, faster, smarter, more efficient, or less expensive.

DOMINO: Present day declining revenues force Town and County governments to do more with less.  It is important that all Trustees have a science based understanding of bacteriological water testing and DNA signatures to eliminate guessing regarding the source of bacterial contaminations. This allows the Town to and correctly apply limited resources to a valid solution with subsequent re-opening of waters to fishing and shellfish harvesting.

GHOSIO: Less than 24 hours after Superstorm Sandy, as a Town Trustee,  I called and hosted a meeting of public officials and employees to formulate a response strategy with the intent to develop an expedited review process to allow for quicker repairs on the water front. By defining an “emergency permit” for this event, creating an expedited process, the cooperation of the various offices involved and a dedicated office staff, we were able to issue 135 emergency permits, over 450 more permits, and more than 1400 inspections and actions (over 800 actual field inspections)on well over 6 miles of coast line, related to storm damage restoration, in less than 10 months. While not perfect, making the permitting process as quick as possible, helped a great many people get their lives back on track after the devastation.[divider_1]

SANDERS: I have implemented a modernization program for the American Legion in Southold with the development of a new website and future Pay-Pal contribution service to strengthen our reserves and insure a viable future. I planned and executed two major Army pre-deployment real-world logistical training exercises with 100% accountability of all resources. My military background has drilled into me the need for efficiency and this is what I will bring to job as Trustee.

BREDEMEYER: The shellfish advisory committee that I chair is using very expensive DNA technology to determine the exact sources of bacterial contamination of our creeks for which there is no alternative at present. I have been tracking new technology. If re-elected, I hope to test new screening methods that will save money through the use of emerging technology.

WELLS: In addition to the above-mentioned projects, in 2012 I was responsible for managing the transition of the Legal Department to a new national system. I converted all paper-based forms to electronic forms, installed a digital library of documentation with easy search capability, implemented electronic workflow with digital signature approvals, email notifications, alerts and calendaring. I delivered the project on time and on budget resulting in expedited cases, and improved controls. I also successfully led a project to standardize all television station programming, making centralized decision-making possible.

DINIZIO: Together with other members of the Zoning Board we set up a procedure to track variance application plans so that they are consistent throughout the process.

EISENSTEIN: The Town Justice Court is continually filled with cases that do not need to be decided before a judge and in so doing needlessly clog the justice system. Several years ago I introduced mediation services to the Town Justice Court. As a trained mediator I effectively mediated many cases and literally save the court system hundreds of hours. This obviously was able to allow the system be more responsive. Additionally, I am in the process of setting up a Community of Neighbors mediation program in which I will train community residents to mediate local issues and keep them out of the justice system.

ROTHMAN: I have run a small business that is unique, successful and still here after close to 100 years. I have evolved with times, using the technology that is available to me. This technology is what makes things better, faster and smarter and not to utilize these tools, you would not be able to grow as efficiently.  Keeping up with the times does  saves time and money.

FINORA: As an independent business person I regularly seek to streamline my business. I am currently moving our invoices to an electronic-based system, reducing/eliminating paperwork. I’ve also recently begun helping clients create and implement crisis-communications plans.
