Q4: Coastal Stewards ?

Q4 Coastal Stewards: Normally all private property owners get a least a once a year free brush cleanup. As waterfront owners have brush, flotsam and jetsam on their beaches and shorelines, would you support a change in the definitions of allowable debris to equalize the cleanup program for all property owners?

Jim King

Jim King, Trustee Candidate: Ordinary beach clean up of debris, flotsam and jetsam should be encouraged as long as there is no re-grading or alteration of the beach. Perhaps materials from beach clean-ups could be placed at town road ends or parking lots for pick up.

Bob Ghosio

Bob Ghosio, Trustee Candidate: 4. I have heard this question many times and I think it’s a fair point. Of course, water front owners also benefit from the brush pick up because most have landward yards that are wooded etc., in addition to the water side of the property. That being said, I would support a separate pick up of flotsam and jetsam, and even debris picked up during a beach cleanup, public or private. Off hand, I’d say we would have to establish a set period of time and set rules for curbside disposal, but I would think it would have to be separate from the brush pick up since the beach debris are disposed of in a different waste stream. Budgeting for this would be a discussion for the town board of course.

Bill Ruland

Bill Ruland, Councilman Candidate: I think a program similar to what took place in the Goldsmith’s Inlet area would be a better way to address this issue.

Scott Russell

Scott Russell, Supervisor Candidate: The issue of the annual brush and leaf pick up by Southold Town has nothing to do with the issue of flotsam and jetsam that washes up on beaches. The issue is a fair one for waterfront owners to raise and I am certainly willing to consider the waiver of fees for disposal for such items. However, this is an issue that needs to be evaluated on its own and not in the context of annual cleanups.

Jill Doherty

Jill Doherty, Council Candidate: I would support a feasible program for the Town to allow a pickup program for beach and shoreline clean up. This to me is a win/win. The homeowners clean up our shorelines and the property owner doesn’t have the expense of disposing whatever floats up on their property. This would probably have to be a separate clean up from brush clean up. Maybe it can be organized to coincide with the Spring beach clean up days that various groups in town do each year.

Steve Brautigam

Steve Brautigam, Trustee Candidate: The town keeps its beaches clean of certain debris and I would support the private beach homeowners the right to remove the same and have the town pick it up once a year.

Bob Meguin

Bob Meguin, Supervisor Candidate: I would support a program to allow a change in definition for the removal of beach debris and pick up by the town.
