Re: Hurricane Irene

The Southold Town Office of Emergency Management is declaring that a state of emergency will be in effect starting at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, August 27th, and will remain in effect until further notice.

The following shelters will be open as of 7:00 p.m. Saturday and will be staffed and ready to receive residents at that time:

Fishers Island School, Oysterponds Elementary School, Greenport High School

Southold High School, Cutchogue East Elementary School, Mattituck High School

· Those who are seeking shelter should bring supplies with them to the shelter and those supplies should include medication, blankets, flashlights, snacks and water.

· All shelters referenced above are pet friendly; however, all pets should be brought to the shelter in a crate or cage and pet owners are reminded to bring any food or items your pet may require.

· Residents are reminded that in most cases the safest place to be during the storm is in your home. However, those who live in flood-prone areas should make a decision quickly to seek shelter.

The state of emergency will prohibit all unnecessary vehicles from roads for the duration of the event. Of course, emergency response vehicles will be permitted travel during the storm.

· Residents with special needs who have questions or concerns should call 852-4900 or 298-4475.

· Everyone is reminded that the fire departments are not shelters and those seeking shelter should only go to one of the shelters listed above. Further, we again ask all residents to make decisions quickly and to remember that the police department and your fire departments will be extremely busy and all resources will be focused on the event. They will simply not be available to help you evacuate during the storm.

· Information will be available on WLNG, Channel 22 and Southold Town’s website: http://southoldtown.northfork.net
