Beware of Open Space Next to You?
April 22, 2011 by Patricia Moore · Leave a Comment
The Town Board’s purchase of open space throughout the Town of Southold have been overwhelmingly supported by the community. However, when land next to your house or in close proximity to your neighborhood is considered for acquisition by the Town for open space, the surrounding property owners must weigh the benefit of the open space with the detriment which comes from the intrusion into your privacy by the public use of the open space. Recently, intrusion into your private use has expanded. Attorney Pat Moore explains it all here.

Washington State’s Whatcom County policy of valuing the potential environmental benefits of natural disasters over the lives and property of its own citizens is unacceptable . . . and unlawful.
Citizens ask the Town to use their SMEM brain
February 16, 2011 by Joanna Lane · 1 Comment
We were invited to present our #Get SMEMsmart project (Social Media Emergency Management) to the six Board Members of the town of Southold today ( Feb 15th). It was an informal work session, round table discussion, with pen and paper, no internet connection, except for a smart phone, which as a practical matter could not be used as a demo tool without amplification to a large screen. Basic, simple, friendly, but difficult to engage participants of mixed knowledge and experience in matters of social media on the internet without access to a live stream. Read more here.

Small Town America – Easing into Social Media Disaster Planning
January 29, 2011 by Joanna Lane · 1 Comment
Why do SoutholdVOICE members and our community in general need to take Social Media Disaster Planning seriously? Supervisor Scott Russell said he sees Facebook as a way to communicate with residents on a day-to-day basis, but it will not be his emergency management team’s priority. We welcome the Supervisor’s invitation to meet with him and his Emergency management team to discuss our concerns with this policy, and bringing with us the American Red Cross White Paper on just this topic, amongst other things. Read about it here.
