Due to the latest Winter Storm Watch advisory and because so many will have to travel to attend the scheduled meeting on Wednesday, please be advised that the Coastal Erosion Meeting has been postponed. New Meeting Details: Wednesday, February 16, 2011, 10am, Peconic Rec Center. PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE AND TIME. Please pass along this information to anyone you know that was planning to attend this meeting.

Why do SoutholdVOICE members and our community in general need to take Social Media Disaster Planning seriously? Supervisor Scott Russell said he sees Facebook as a way to communicate with residents on a day-to-day basis, but it will not be his emergency management team’s priority. We welcome the Supervisor’s invitation to meet with him and his Emergency management team to discuss our concerns with this policy, and bringing with us the American Red Cross White Paper on just this topic, amongst other things. The Town is posting periodic updates for the Comprehensive Master Plan for Southold – Southold 2020. So far, there’s just one Status update from November 16 2010, which is a powerpoint slide presentation, which you can view here as a video. This includes a time line through to October this year, when the intention is to submit the final draft to the Board and begin the Environmental Review (SEQRA).

Realistic expectations for a solution to our erosion challenge will be the focus of Supervisor Scott Russell’s agenda at a meeting at Southold Town Hall on Feb 2nd at 1pm, especially along Route 48 and the LI Sound area . Representatives from the Army Corps of Engineers, the DEC and the Suffolk County DPW will be in attendance together with Legislator Ed Romaine and town officials.

An emergency permit is available from the Trustees office in cases of dramatic and sudden damage caused by a storm or natural disaster in which further damage to private property is eminent without protective measures put in place. The Southold Trustee Emergency Permit Application is a 10 page package that is available to download here.

Ten days after the blizzard struck the North Fork coastline, FEMA showed up this week to inspect the damage to infrastructure and property along the coastline in Southold, caused December 26th to 28th last year. The first team, called the Public Assistance Team (PA) arrived Wednesday Jan 5th, followed by the Individual Assist Team (IA) on Thursday Jan 6th 2011. Find out who came, the sites visited and how you may be able to benefit from FEMA assistance.
