Alkylphenols, Mosquitoes & Lobsters – Understanding the Theories

In 2010, fifteen scientists attended a conference at the University of Rhode Island, and presented their findings following a three-year, $3 million URI Sea Grant to study lobster shell disease. Hans Laufer, a University of Connecticut research professor of molecular and cellular biology, maintains that Alkylphenols interfere with the lobsters’ shell development and they are being found in lobster body tissues in Long Island Sound. This week, Long Island Sound lobstermen in Connecticut pointed the finger at New York for a late-summer lobster die-off in the western section of the Sound following the rains of Tropical Storm Irene. They want New York to change the chemical it uses to control mosquitoes.

Realistic expectations for a solution to our erosion challenge will be the focus of Supervisor Scott Russell’s agenda at a meeting at Southold Town Hall on Feb 2nd at 1pm, especially along Route 48 and the LI Sound area . Representatives from the Army Corps of Engineers, the DEC and the Suffolk County DPW will be in attendance together with Legislator Ed Romaine and town officials.

FEMA Assessment Teams arrive on the NOFO following blizzard

Ten days after the blizzard struck the North Fork coastline, FEMA showed up this week to inspect the damage to infrastructure and property along the coastline in Southold, caused December 26th to 28th last year. The first team, called the Public Assistance Team (PA) arrived Wednesday Jan 5th, followed by the Individual Assist Team (IA) on Thursday Jan 6th 2011. Find out who came, the sites visited and how you may be able to benefit from FEMA assistance.

BEFORE and AFTER photos of one small section of Long Island Sound coastline in Southold, damaged by the great blizzard of 2010 – Hashamomuck Cove. The risk of a washout there has been known for some time, and now we see the kind of result that studying an issue to death can produce.
