What qualifications does each candidate have to make decisions on how waterfront property owners can protect their property? Would they be willing to consider professional recommendations as they relate to various applications/permitting processes that may or may not conform to the existing policies?
Alkylphenols, Mosquitoes & Lobsters – Understanding the Theories
October 6, 2011 by Joanna Lane · Leave a Comment
In 2010, fifteen scientists attended a conference at the University of Rhode Island, and presented their findings following a three-year, $3 million URI Sea Grant to study lobster shell disease. Hans Laufer, a University of Connecticut research professor of molecular and cellular biology, maintains that Alkylphenols interfere with the lobsters’ shell development and they are being found in lobster body tissues in Long Island Sound. This week, Long Island Sound lobstermen in Connecticut pointed the finger at New York for a late-summer lobster die-off in the western section of the Sound following the rains of Tropical Storm Irene. They want New York to change the chemical it uses to control mosquitoes.
Private Property – or Not

Under California’s “prescriptive rights” or “implied dedication” doctrine, if the public regularly traverses an area of private property for a period of at least five years, the public may obtain a permanent “right” to continued use of that area, even without the landowner’s consent.
Pain in the Dock

A floating dock that has broken loose is a danger to public safety. Washed up on a private beach, it represents a significant headache for the waterfront property owner faced with possible liabilities. This story was first published in our June newsletter, prior to the arrival of another unwelcome Summer visitor, Hurricane Irene, resulting in the reorganization of various local dock configurations, including this one. Hurricane Irene – SMEM Internet Resources
August 27, 2011 by Joanna Lane · Leave a Comment
In addition to TV and Radio news, there is the internet. Just like phone lines, websites can get clogged. Not all agencies appreciate that their websites don’t work well on a smartphone, especially the ones relevant to our area. FEMA knows this, so they have a mobile website at http://m.fema.gov and encourage the use of social media for emergency management. Here is a non-exhaustive list of other resources I have put together for the east end of Long Island. These will help your situational awareness in the impacted area, before, during and after the storm. More Helicopter Noise – Joe Fischetti answers questions
August 8, 2011 by Joanna Lane · Leave a Comment
Joseph Fischetti, PE Helicopter Advisory Committee was a guest speaker at Southold VOICE’s Annual meeting last week. Mr. Fischetti spoke for about 20 minutes, then answered questions. Mr. Fischetti’s presentation did not lend itself to video capture for various reasons, but given the strong interest being expressed in this topic, I’m posting the section where the lights go up and Mr. Fischetti answers audience questions, which I hope you find interesting. You’ll need to turn up the volume.
